NLAA needs volunteers for the Cross-country Running Series for Schools
The first meet of the 22nd Annual Cross-country Running Series for Schools is scheduled for this Saturday, September 20, at the Pippy Park Driving Range on Ridge Road, St. John's. Meets two and three are to follow on September 27 and October 4. The NLAA organizes the event and is looking for volunteers.
The cross-country meets are full of fun and excitement; hundreds of students age 9-17 are taking part. The XC Series is the largest cross-country running event in the province with over 800 participants at each meet. I expect similar participation for this year's meets. Please visit our web site for information on the Series:
http://www.nlaa.ca/xcseries/index.php
The NLAA needs help to safely organize this wonderful school event. On occasions we have some spectators staying a little longer or come earlier to help, especially with the marshaling duties, however, every year we are struggling to get sufficient number of volunteers.
The positions that we are looking people for are not demanding. We are looking for volunteers that can help between 8:00 am and 12:30 pm; however, even if one can stay for couple of hours it would be of great help, especially in the mornings when we have the most participants.
We need help setting up the course with pylons and the finish line. Some help is needed on the race course to direct runners. With the large number of entries, registration requires to be very efficient and prompt. Verifying all registration information is time consuming and tiring. We need at least 6 to 8 people for the first couple of hours of registration.
If you live in or visiting the St. John's greater area and have some time to spare this Saturday or the next two, and would like to give something back to the NLAA, please come and help out.
The following is an outline of activities on Sep 20, Sep 27 and Oct 4:
8:30 am Registration desk opens
9:30 am Start of first race
12:30 pm expected end time of the meet
Volunteers are needed in the following areas:
6-8 Registration
4-6 Setup - start/finish area/course
10-12 Marshals - course and finish/start area
6-8 Finish line/chute - timing, recording of numbers and keeping runners in order
2 Awards
Please contact the NLAA office for further information. To volunteer, please sign-up online or contact the office:

NLAA Officials Introductory Clinic - June 7
The NLAA is inviting former track and field athletes, parents and other interested parties in becoming an official or learning the competition rules, to attend a free introductory clinic - Introduction to Officiating Track and Field.
We encourage all parents, especially of new athletes, to consider taking the clinic so you can be of assistance at the meets. Without officials, the meets cannot continue to be offered, which affects all athletes, young and old. There will be no cost to attend the clinic, but numbers will be limited to the first 30 entries. The Clinic is scheduled for 9:00 - 12:00 noon, Saturday, June 7, at the Pearlgate Track and Field Complex, Mount Pearl.
The clinic will review basic competition rules and best practices for track and field events. The workshop will be held indoors and if weather permits the group will go outside for venue walk about. Please come prepared with a coat and appropriate foot wear. Dress for comfort and light activity.
Please register before Wednesday, June 4:
