Sport Newfoundland and Labrador - 2013 Annual Awards



Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (SportNL) is now accepting nominations from Provincial Sport Organizations for the 2013 Annual Awards. Awards are considered for an outstanding event performance or a series of performances in the year of nomination from January - December, 2013. Sport Governing Bodies will be limited to ONE nomination per category. The selection committee may consider additional nominations if necessary.

Deadline to be received by NLAA - Friday, January 10, 2014

Nominations are to be made directly to the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA) for final nomination to a category. Completed nomination forms must be SUBMITTED by Friday, January 10, 2014.

Forsey second at the Canadian Cross-country Running Championship

Jillian Forsey, the Canadian junior cross-country running champion in 2012, concluded her 2013 season with an excellent second place finish in the junior championship in Vancouver on Saturday.  

The 18 year-old native of Kippens finished the wet and muddy five kilometre course in 18 minutes 2 seconds, securing her a place on the Canadian team for the 2014 North American, Central American and Caribbean(NACAC) cross country championships to be held in February in Trinidad. 

This marks the third year in succession that Forsey has been selected for the meet - a record for a Canadian junior woman.

Athletics - Day 5 of the 2013 Jeux du Canada, Sherbrooke, Quebec




Team NL had the best placings yet at the 2013 Canada Summer Games Athletics competition - two 4th place finish. Daniel Kelloway in the 400m final with a new provincial junior and senior record of 48.01 and Chris Dugas in the 100m SO final with a time of 13.08.

Team NL has produced many personal best performances during the first two days of competition, including a provincial junior record. All events in Day 4 are finals and all remaining Team NL athletes, with the exception of Jillian Forsey, will enter the competition. Jillian is slated to run the 5000m event on Day 5 Friday at 7:40pm local time.

Athletics - Day 2 of the 2013 Jeux du Canada, Sherbrooke, Quebec

Twenty-three NLAA athletes will enter the second day of the 2013 Canada Games athletics competition. With the exception of the 3000m steeplechase, all other are qualifying rounds for the finals on Thursday and Friday.

The first event for Team NL will be the 200m SO at 12:50pm and the second session for the day will start at 6:00pm local time.

Penney Mazda Cape to Cabot 2013 Registration opens Aug. 1



PENNEY MAZDA CAPE TO CABOT ROAD RACE OPENS FOR REGISTRATION

The 7th Annual Penney Mazda Cape to Cabot 20km running race opens for registration on Aug. 1 at 12 noon – sign up now for an unforgettable running experience!

Known as the “toughest race in eastern North America,” the Penney Mazda Cape to Cabot on Sunday Oct. 20, 2013 starts at Cape Spear and climbs three major hills before reaching the historic waterfront of St. John’s.

From there, it’s just one more mile - all uphill - to the finish line near Cabot Tower at the top of Signal Hill.
The race is open for a maximum of 400 runners, and it sold out in four days in 2012 - so register early at www.capetocabot.com !

Provincial Legion Track and Field Team Selected


The 2013 Provincial Legion Track and Field Championships was held on Friday and Saturday, July 5-6, 2013, Pearlgate Track and Field Complex in Mount Pearl. The Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA) is pleased to announces that following athletes and staff have been selected to the Provincial Legion Team:

Chantal Barnes (St. John's), Jennifer Boland (St John's), Emily Chaisson (Corner Brook), Harshal Deshpande (St. John's), Deepal Deshpande (St. John's), Mykenzi Harding (St. John's), Nicholas Harris (Gander), Ashley Hutchings (Paradise), Asha Kennedy (St John's), Tiuri Lomond (Stephenville), Patrick Mcilroy (St.Philips), Joseph Pittman (Marystown), Mark Rowsell (Corner Brook), Megan Ryan (Marystown), Jennifer Turner (Gander), Donovan White (Stephenville), Marjorie Williston (Port Au Port), Alternates: Rita-Jane St. Croix (Stephenville), Tyler Kelloway (Corner Brook), Erin O'Brien (Mount Pearl). Team staff include coach Derrick Pittman (Gander), and Chaperones Jim and Carol Kennedy from St. John's.

The Royal Canadian Legion Track and Field program is a nationally sanctioned program culminating in a national track & field camp and national championship for Canadian youth between the ages of 12 and 17. The Royal Canadian Legion Track and Field program is divided into two sections - a two-day meet and an educational and/or technical clinic. In 2007, a coaching academy was also included in the program.

The Royal Canadian Legion, in association with Athletics Canada, will host the 2013 Legion Canadian Youth Track & Field Championships. This year's event will be held at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley British Columbia between 7 - 13 August 2013. Competition dates are set for 9 - 12 August 2013.

When/Where/Time: Wednesday, April 24, Sport NL Building (1296A Kenmount Road), 6:00pm-10:00pm
4-hour workshop that will teach you how to enhance the well-being of the athletes in your care and be a positive role model in the world of sport. In an interactive and dynamic learning environment, our expert facilitators will guide you through how to enhance athlete welfare by:
  • Recognizing the potential for, and presence of maltreatment in sport;
  • Learning when and how to intervene when you observe or suspect maltreatment.
You will also:
  • Implement the NCCP's renowned six-step decision-making model;
  • Master the art of the difficult conversation; and
  • Create a list of key positive athlete development strategies you can implement in your coaching right away.
2.       Coaching and Leading Effectively (Competition Development)
When/Where/Time: Sunday, April 28, Sport NL Building (1296A Kenmount Road), 9:00am-5:00pm
Target: Instructors, Competition Coaches
  • promote a positive image of sport, and model it to athletes and those supporting their performance
  • deliver clear messages and explanations when communicating with athletes and their supporters;
  • identify opportunities to interact with all athletes and use feedback to improve and correct performance and behaviour.

1.     Prevention and Recovery (Competition Development)
When/Where/Time: Sunday, April 14, Sport NL Building (1296A Kenmount Road), 9:00am-5:00pm
Target: Instructors, Competition Coaches
After taking Prevention and Recovery you will have the knowledge needed to:
  • identify common injuries in your sport and develop appropriate prevention and recovery strategies to keep your athletes injury-free during training and competition;
  • offer valuable information and guidance on hydration, nutrition and sleep as they relate to injury prevention;
  • choose skills and drills that help athletes perform appropriate warm-ups and cool-downs;
  • develop functional evaluations for an athlete's return to play;
  • implement recovery and regeneration techniques to help an athlete maintain or return to optimal performance post injury.
2.    Resistance (Professional Development)
When/Where/Time: Monday, April 15, Swilers Club (100 Crosbie Road, St. John’s), 6:00pm-10:00pm
Target: Coaches working with athletes at the high school or club level in a competition setting
A must-have for competitive coaches, this dynamic and interactive introductory workshop will teach you how to prevent injuries and increase athlete performance through proven resistance training tools. Become a better coach by augmenting your plan with elements such as:

  • Muscular endurance training
