Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Now Accepting Applications for 2013 Scholarship/Bursary Program

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Now Accepting Applications for 2013 Scholarship/Bursary Program

Applications are now open for the 2013 Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program. The deadline for applications is March 15, 2013.

“Sport is part of the healthy, well-rounded development of our youth, so we are pleased once again to help deserving athletes balance their athletic and academic responsibilities,” said Rod Nicholl, President, Sport NL. “The ability to award up to 20 academic scholarships, valued at $500 each, means that Sport NL can assist hard working and dedicated athletes achieve both athletic and academic goals.”

The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program has distributed thousands of dollars to deserving students around the province in its over 20 year history. The financial assistance it provides to qualifying amateur athletes, coaches and officials assists in offsetting costs of training and competition. In order for students to qualify for a scholarship, they must be residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, attending a post-secondary institution and be registered members of a provincial sport organization.

“Grants can help alleviate some of the financial burden that our athletes face today, and that is something government supports because it gives our youth a chance to lead balanced lives in the classroom and outside,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This program is an acknowledgement of the hard work happening in classrooms, libraries, gymnasiums and other fields of play.”

For the sixth year, the Frank T. Butler Memorial Scholarship is being sponsored by Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. Valued at $1,000, the scholarship commemorates Frank Butler, who was vital to the development of athletics at Memorial University, and played an integral part in developing inter-university sport experience across Canada.

All applications for the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program will be used to select the winners of the $5,000 Team Gushue Scholarship Award. The Team Gushue award is presented annually during the Premier’s Athletic Awards reception. Athletes must apply through the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship Program to be eligible for this award. The Team Gushue Scholarship Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence was established in 2007 in recognition of Team Gushue’s gold medal victory at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. The Award will be presented to one male and one female athlete annually, who are currently attending, or planning to attend, a recognized post-secondary institution and have competed in a national or international level sporting competition in their last competitive season.
