17 athletes going to the 2015 Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships



The 2015 Provincial Legion Track and Field Championships were held on Friday and Saturday, July 3-4, Pearlgate Track and Field Complex in Mount Pearl. The Provincial Legion Command selected a team of 17 athletes to represent this province. The National Championships will be held in Sainte-Thérèse, QC, August 5 - 11. The NL Team will compete in the Midget (U16) & Youth categories (U18).

The Royal Canadian Legion Track and Field program is a nationally sanctioned program culminating in a national track & field camp and national championship for Canadian youth between the ages of 12 and 17. The Royal Canadian Legion Track and Field program is divided into two sections - a three-day meet and an educational and/or technical clinic. In 2007, a coaching academy was also included in the program.

Introductory Officials Clinic - Track & Field Events


NLAA is inviting former track and field athletes and interested parents to attend a free introductory clinic - Introduction to Officiating Track and Field. The clinics will provide an overview of the different track and field events and will introduce participants to various tasks performed by officials. The clinic will review basic competition rules and best practices for both track and field events.

The workshop will start indoors and will follow with outside session. Please come prepared with a coat and appropriate foot wear. Dress for comfort and light activity.

We encourage parents of athletes involved in track and field, to register for the clinic so you can be of assistance at the meets. Officials play a vital role in ensuring fair competition and assisting athletes to achieve their best.

NLAA Selects Head Coach for the 2017 Canada Summer Games for Athletics

St. John's, NL - April 23, 2015, The Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA) announced today that Jennifer Stender has accepted the Athletics’ Head Coach Position for the 2017 Canada Summer Games.

Stender a Level III Track and Field coach will lead a team of 30-40 athletes that will compete in the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Canada Summer Games are scheduled from July 28 to August 13, 2017.  Athletes age 22 and under will compete in 25 track and field events for men and women.

"We are excited to have such an experienced coach leading the Athletics team for 2017." said George Stanoev, NLAA's Technical Director. "Jennifer is an elite athlete, a former provincial record holder and brings wealth of knowledge and athletic experience to the 2017 Canada Games Program.  She has a proven track record in growing the sport of athletics from grass root level to high performance.  Many of her athletes have set numerous provincial records".

An NLAA Hall of Fame inductee, Stender competed in the 1981 and 1985 Canada Summer Games, represented Newfoundland and Labrador on the national stage on many occasions including varsity competitions as a member of the Memorial University track and field team. Following her successful athletic career, Stender moved to coaching and was a member of the Canada Games coach staff for the 1993 and 2009 Canada Summer Games.

Stender developed a successful track and field program at Mary Queen of Peace Elementary and now leads the Vipers track and field program at St. Paul's Junior High School in St. John’s.  This past weekend Viper’s Track and Field Team won the Championship titles in both, boys and girls divisions, at the NLAA Spring Indoor Track and Field Meet.

This year represents the 30th. Anniversary of the CHCM Road Race being run in the town of Garnish. To commemorate this special occasion, Mariners Athletics Running Club is adding an alumni component to this year's race. The Club is sending a special invitation to all past overall winners, both male and female, from 1981 – 2014. Those who decide to attend will be granted free admission to this year's event.

Introductory Officials Clinic - Track Events

February 21 and March 7, 2015, MUN Field House


NLAA is inviting former track and field athletes and interested parents to attend one of the two officials clinics offered on February 21 and March 7. The clinics will provide an overview of the different track events and will introduce participants to various tasks performed by officials.

The two clinics will be held at the MUN Field House just before the track meets on February 21 and March 7. Participants can attend either session.

Date: February 21, (repeat on March 7)
Location: MUN Field House
Arrive: between 5:45 PM and 5:55 PM
Session Starts: 6:00 PM sharp
Prerequisite: None

The sessions will be held indoors; please dress for comfort and light activity, and wear indoor sneakers.

Bring pen and paper to take notes. The session will last for about 20-25 minutes. All participants available to volunteer at the meet will be assigned volunteer position.

2015 10k and Half Marathon road championship invitations


Invitation to Athletics Canada 1/2 Marathon Championships

Athletics Canada and The Scotiabank Calgary Race weekend are pleased to invite you to the Canadian Open Half Marathon championships, onSunday May 31, 2015.  Voted the 2009 2010 2012 and 2013 Best Road Race in Alberta, the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon is a challenging, competitive and fun event. ​

The standard for travel and accommodation assistance men is 1:10 and for women 1:22. Men faster than 1:15 and women faster than 1:27are eligible to receive complimentary entry. The deadline for travel and accommodation assistance applications is March 1, 2015.

Athletics Canada and The Tamarak Ottawa Race weekend are pleased to invite you to the Canadian Open 10k championships, onSaturday May 23, 2015The Ottawa 10K is the only IAAF Gold Label 10k event in Canada and one of only four IAAF Gold Label 10K events in the world. The Ottawa 10K attracts one of the world’s best fields of elite runners as well as thousands of participants from across the National Capital Region. 

The standard for complimentary entry and front line access is 32:30/15:30 for men and 40:00/19:00 for women. To receive accommodations and travel assistance, (to a maximum of $1000 and shared accommodation) the standards are 29:45/14:25 and 34:00/16:30.

Note that the women's race will be a women's only start. In order to participate in the Canadian championship, you must take part in the women's start.

Athletic Excellence Fund


The SportNL Scholarship, Team Gushue Award, Elite Athlete Assistance and the Premier’s Athletic Awards application is now available. These awards are part of the Athletic Excellence Fund- a program which provides financial support for provincial athletes, coaches and officials.  

Please distribute this information to all of those who are eligible. 

All applications must be returned to the PSO’s on or before January 30th, 2015. There is a fillable form available on the SportNL website: http://www.sportnl.ca/funding
