Team Indigenous NL Call for Coaches and Chaperones


The Aboriginal Sport and Recreation Circle are making a Call for Volunteer Coaches and Chaperones for Team Indigenous Newfoundland Labrador that will participate in the 2017 North American Indigenous Games. The 2017 North American Indigenous Games will take place in Toronto Ontario from July 16-23, 2017.

Team Indigenous Newfoundland Labrador will be competing in Athletics, Badminton, Golf, Rifle Shooting, Swimming, Volleyball and Wrestling.

Coaches Week- Facebook contest

National Coaches Week is September 17-25. During the week Coaching NL is looking to highlight the great work being done by coaches all over the province.

We are looking for athletes to share their story on why their coach is great through our Facebook page.

Each entry posted to our page will enter the athlete and coach into a draw for Sportchek gift cards!

NLAA Athletes shatter 8 provincial records, and Evan Knight brings Gold, Silver, Bronze medals from the Legion National Championships!


Bright future for the Provincial Track and Field Programs in NL!

NLAA Provincial Team athletes competed successfully at two major National Championship this past weekend (August 5-7).

The Provincial U18 and U16 teams competed at the Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships, Ste-Therese/Blainville, Quebec; and the U23 at the Eastern Canadian Espoir Championships, Moncton, N.B.

Provincial Records:

  • Evan Knight (St. John's) won three medals at the Legion Nationals - gold in the boys 800m (2:00.06), silver in the 2000m (5:48.32), and bronze in the 1200m (3:14.42). In the process, Even set a provincial midget record in all of his events!
  • Camryn Bonia (St. John's)  set a new provincial record in the midget girls 800m by finishing 4th with a time of 2:15.55!
  • The Provincial Legion Team finished 4th in the Midget Boys 1600m Medley Relay (400-200-200-800) with a new provincial record of 3:53.73: 1) Eric Knight (St John's); 2) Mark Ford (St John's); 3) Nick Butt (Stephenville); 4) Evan Knight (St John's)
  • Shae Ledevehat (Mount Pearl) set a new Midget record in the Outdoor Pentathlon for 6th place with 2577 points.
  • Jennifer Boland competed at the Eastern Canadian Espoir Championships and finished 4th in the women 100m sprint in the senior division. Jennifer Boland set new junior and senior records in the 100m with a time of 12.43!

NL Athletes to compete this weekend at the 2016 Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships

NLAA and the Provincial Legion Command selected a team of 17 athletes to represent this province at the 2016 Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships. The NL Team will compete in the Midget (U16) & Youth categories (U18).

The 2016 Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships will take place 5-7 August and will be hosted by Ste Therese/Blainville, Quebec. Competition site: Stade d'athlétisme Richard-Garneau

For over fifty years The Royal Canadian Legion has supported Canada’s youth through training and competition in track and field. The Legion Nationals are Canada’s premier and only nationwide competition for the youth and midget category and are truly national in scale as the Legion supports provincial teams from all provinces and territories in Canada. This support is provided exclusively through funding provided by the members of the Legion.

The Royal Canadian Legion Track and Field program is a nationally sanctioned program culminating in a national track & field camp and a national championship for Canadian youth between the ages of 13 and 17. The Royal Canadian Legion Track and Field program is divided into two sections - a three-day meet and an educational and technical clinic. In 2007, a coaching academy was also included in the program.

Introductory Officials Clinic - Track Events

February 20 and March 12, 2016, MUN Field House


NLAA is inviting former track and field athletes and interested parents to attend one of the two officials clinics offered on February 20 and March 12. The clinics will provide an overview of the different track events and will introduce participants to various tasks performed by officials.

The two clinics will be held at the MUN Field House just before the track meets on February 20 and March 12. Participants can attend either session.

Date: February 20 (repeat on March 12)
Location: MUN Field House

Clinic Schedule:
  •     5:45pm Arrival
  •     6:00pm-6:30pm Overview of rules
  •     6:45pm-8:30pm Observe Event Conduct
  •     8:30pm-8:45pm Debriefing

Prerequisite: None

Instructors:

  • Michelle Wilkins

This Clinic is free of charge. The sessions will be held indoors; please dress for comfort and light activity, and wear indoor sneakers. Bring pen and paper to take notes. The session will last for about 3 hours.

Most Clinic participants will be asked to sit at designated areas to observe the conduct of races and take notes. Some may be assigned a volunteer position as part of the officials' crew.

RBC Training Ground / Camp des Recrues is LIVE



Dear Athletes,

We wanted to invite you to a new event called RBC Training Ground where you can put your athletic abilities to the test to support you in achieving your athletic dreams.
RBC Training Ground will host 4 athlete identification camps from February 20th to March 12th, in 4 cities across Canada. Attached you will find all the details for the event in Halifax. You can find the 3 additional dates and locations on the event  website .

Athletes selected to attend will compete in the following exercises:
  •  POWER - vertical jump, standing jump, standing triple jump
  • SPEED - 40m running sprint, 6 second bike sprint
  • STRENGTH -1 upper body push, 1 upper body pull, 1 leg press, medicine ball throw
  • ENDURANCE - Arm/leg bike

One top performer at each RBC Training Ground will get the ultimate sport experience – a trip to the Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games. In order to participate in the contest component of the event you will need to meet all contest eligibility criteria that are laid out in the contest rules and regulations.
Based on your performance results at the RBC Training Ground event, you may be invited to go through additional sport specific testing and skill assessments.  Selected athletes may then be invited to join an NSO sport specific RBC Next Generation Program. This program will provide funding through the selected NSO to support you in your training and development.
RBC Training Ground participants attending may be showcased and featured CBC/Radio – Canada network and RBC Training Ground website.

WOMEN & LEADERSHIP PROGRAM



The CAAWS Women and Leadership Program consists of a series of five 3-hour professional development (PD) sessions that blend theory with practical applications, and provide an opportunity for  women working or volunteering in the sport or physical activity sector to share experiences, reflect on ideas and apply specific techniques. The sessions also allow for networking opportunities among participants. Developed for women by women, the workshops are now being rolled-out across Canada.

Coaching Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to partner with CAAWS to offer the workshops to the women of our province.

Workshop #1: Developing Your Network (DYN)
Strong networking skills can be a valuable tool, both personally and professionally. From building organizational partnerships to knowing about upcoming events, building your network is a long-term investment with great payoffs.

  • Explore the value of personal and professional networks
  • Identify strategies to build and maintain your network
  • Rehearse networking scenarios


Workshop #2: Work-Life Balance (WLB)
For many women, balancing the demands of work, family, friends, and personal time is a challenge. This workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to explore a variety of strategies to add more balance to their lives.

  • Explore the need for balance in your life
  • Examine 10 key solutions to help you find and maintain balance
  • Share tips and success stories

2016 Athletic Excellence Fund


Completed applications must be received by NLAA on or before Friday, January 29, 2016.


Sport NL Athletic Scholarship

Sport NL's Athletic Scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to qualifying amateur athletes, coaches/ officials to help offset the costs of training and competition. Must have current full time attendance and be in good standing at a recognized post-secondary institution.

Premier's Athletic Awards

Designed to recognize athletic excellence of the province's athletes. Financial support is provided to select athletes to help with costs incurred through training and competition. Athletes must be currently training and competing in the sport indicated and intend to continue to train upon receipt of the award. This program is designed for applicants who are 12 years of age or older.

Elite Athlete Assistance

Designed to support high performance athletes from Newfoundland & Labrador. Financial support is provided to select athletes to support training and competition and must be used for this purpose only. Athletes must be currently training and competing in the sport indicated and intend to continue to train upon receipt of their award. This program is designed for applicants up to 30 years of age.

Team Gushue Award

The Team Gushue Award will be presented to one male and one female athlete annually who competed in a national or international level sporting competition in their last competitive season. Must have current full time attendance and be in good standing at a recognized post-secondary institution.
