Funding now available for the We are coaches program!

The Coaching Association of Canada’s (CAC) Women in Coachingprogram, has offered a “We are Coaches” program since 2005 toassist in meeting its objective of increasing the number of coaching andleadership opportunities for women at all levels of sport. Thespecific objective of We are Coaches is to recruit, train, and retainwomen coaches and leaders in community sports by providing encouragement, bestpractice models, case studies, templates, and financial support.

This year theprogram will include all sports that have CAC approved, NCCP programs in the followingcontexts:

· Community Sport – Initiation

· Instruction – Beginners

· Competition – Introduction

Funding up to $1,500* is available for:

· Sport-specific, women-only, CAC-approved workshops inthe above contexts; and/or

· The hosting and/or support by NSOs, P/TSOs or clubs,to women who wish to become Learning Facilitators and/or Evaluators.

“Women-only” trainingsessions enable the Learning Facilitator to tackle the specific realities thatwomen face in coaching, and to create a climate of confidence and openness forthe women that attend. This initiative is not only about training -- it is alsoabout increasing the number of coaching andleadership opportunities for women at ALL levels of sport.

To be eligiblefor a We are Coaches grant:

· Sportsapplying must have an under-representation of women in coaching;

· Theworkshop must be hosted on, or prior to March 31, 2012;

· Thehost organization must submit a report and participant list with contact informationfor research purposes to receive the grant;

· Thehost must submit a copy of a Course Register Form (CRF) to CAC. All successfulparticipants will be registered in the NCCP database.

* The host organization can receive a grantof up to $1,500 upon completion of the workshop, submission of the report andCRF to CAC. Preference will be given to sports hosting workshops withfemale learning facilitators.

Please keep in mind that these scholarship/bursary opportunitiesare extremely important to students. If you can take a few minutes to help usdistribute this information it would be greatly appreciated certainly bySportNL but more importantly by the students who are deserving of thisopportunity.

Please note that the Team Gushue Scholarship valued at$5000 each for one male and one female student athletes who are currentlyattending, or planning to attend, a recognized post-secondary institution willbe chosen from the SportNL Scholarship/Bursary applications.

WISE Fund Announcement - PDF file

The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS) announced today that it is offering twelve grants of $900 to active girls and women and/or organizations offering sport programs targeted to girls and women. The WISE (Women in Sport Encouragement) Fund was developed in 2004 in response to the ongoing financial need within the sport community. The fund is designed to help support MSO/NSO/PSO sport initiatives in an effort to financially assist members of the sport community in Canada. This fund is provided by CAAWS, with support from Sport Canada. Since 2004, CAAWS has supported 92 individuals and organizations through this fund, dispersing over $82,800 to members of the sport community.

Please feel free to forward this information within your community as you see fit. National and Multisport Service Organizations, as well as their provincial affiliates, clubs, and teams are encouraged to apply. Coaches, officials and sports administrators may also apply. Please note that CAAWS will no longer be accepting applications from individual athletes.

All details related to the WISE Fund submission criteria, application process and deadlines can be found online at www.caaws.ca/e/grants/wise. Applications will only be ccepted between November 21, 2011 and December 9, 2011. Any applications received before or after these dates will not be considered. The 2012 WISE Fund recipients will be announced in February 2012.

Canada looking for strong performances in Japan at Chiba Ekiden

OTTAWA - Athletics Canada has sent a contingent of eight athletes to Japan to compete tomorrow in the 23rd annual International Chiba Ekiden Road Race Relay. The unique marathon distance road race relay features mixed men’s and women’s teams running six alternate legs.

The Chiba Ekiden relay will unfold in the following order: men’s 5km, women’s 5km, men’s 10km, women’s 5km, men’s 10km and then ending with a women’s 7.195km leg. Canada will face strong competition from twelve nations including the host country, China, Kenya, the United States, Romania and Russia.

Team Leader, Thelma Wright comments on the Canadian team, “Our young team is up to the challenge and will be looking for personal bests and a strong team result against some of the world’s best”. Wright adds, “Experienced Chiba returnees Lanni Marchant and Natasha Wodak along with 2011 Canadian cross-country team members Kate Vaughan and Derek Snider will be joined by 2008 Olympian Taylor Milne and 2009 World Championship team member Rob Watson, Dayna Pidhoresky and young upcoming road racer Terence Attema”.

Katarina Roxon sets National Records at the Boiling Point International

Katarina had an absolutely phenomenal day at the track in Windsor, Ontario competing at the Boiling Point Wheelchair Track Classic International Championships where some of the world’s best competed. She competed in 5 events - the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and the 1500m races, breaking 2 National Records, getting 4 Personal Best Times and with winning 5 First places in the T46 category. It was extremely hot as usual at this competition that we come to every year. She did the 400m, 800m and 1500m in the afternoon when the sun was at its peak. Despite that, she had amazing races.

She broke the 1500m National Record by more than an mind boggling 63 seconds. The previous record was a very long standing 23 year record of 7:11.36 was set by Janelle Rue in 1988. Katarina completely annihilated this record today with a time of 6:08.20 running in this afternoon’s blistering heat.

The next national record was the 400m that she demolished with the new time of 1:08.12. The previous one was her own at 1:10.70 that she set last year at the same competition.

She had personal best times in the 100m, 200m, 400m and the 1500m which was 4 out of the 5 events she competed.

With these timings, Katarina has attained the "B" Qualifying Times (QT) for London 2012 in Athletics in the 100m and the 400m track events. She is working on getting "A" qualifying times God-willing within the next 2 weeks and she will earn a spot for Canada. Of course her earning a spot for Canada does not guarantee a place for her on the national team, but we are ever hopeful.

In Swimming the Qualifying Timing announcements were done last August 15th and Katarina attained the "A" Qualifying time in the 100m Breast Stroke the very next day at the IPC World Championships.

In our post meet discussions, Katarina said, "I thank God first for blessing me so much. For my family, team, training partners, friends and everyone who believed in me and encouraged me. I am so thankful to have such support." She said she was very tired and her legs were a little sore, but apart from that she felt very good. This is the first time she has run 5 races in a 6 hour session especially in an International Track Competition, but has performed like a real trooper from the Rock.

Athletics NorthEAST presents the FLAT OUT 5k

Shake the winter cobwebs from your legs with a new and exciting five-kilometre road race!

The Flat Out 5k is the flattest and fastest 5k running race route in St. John’s.

The Flat Out 5k is scheduled for Sunday April 10, 2011 at 8 AM at Clovelly Golf Club in the beautiful north east end of St. John’s. The race includes chip timing, age group medals, post-race reception at Clovelly Golf Club, and a fast and safe new course.

This zippy 5k route will jumpstart your 2011 road race season – while raising funds for the Athletics NorthEAST – Memorial University Cross-Country Running Scholarship fund. All proceeds beyond minimal expenses will be contributed to the fund. Runners are encouraged to make their own donations to the fund as well. Charitable receipts will be issued.

The Athletics NorthEAST – Memorial University Cross-Country Running Scholarship is an annual award that will help Memorial University runners, both male and female, in their efforts to maximize their running potential.

The Flat Out 5k and the Athletics NorthEAST – Memorial University Cross-Country Scholarship are the creations of the Athletics NorthEAST Running Club (ANE). The club was formed in 2004 to focus training efforts of members for running events ranging from 5k road races to marathons. ANE now has more than 150 active members, including some of the top male and female runners in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Nominations for the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Hall of Fame are being solicited and accepted. The deadline for 2011 nominations is May 20.

Ben Dunne, chair of the Hall’s selection committee, explained the group is looking for as many quality nominations as possible to ensure all those who deserve consideration will receive it.

Information on the submission of nominations may be obtained from the NLAA office at 709-576-1303.-

5km Road Race added to the NLAA Calendar of Events

The NLAA Board has approved a new 5km road race to take place Aberdeen/Stavenger neighbourhood in St. John's on Sunday April 10th. Athletics North-East Running Club in partnership with MUN Athletics will host the road race in an effort to create an endowment scholarship fund for a male and female cross-country runner. Race organizers are in the process of obtaining the City of St. John's Special Events Committee final approval to go ahead with the event. NLAA to offer NCCP Sport Coach on May 6-7-8, 2011

The Course:
The Sport Coach course is based on the new NCCP program and incorporates the relevant sports generic, theoretical aspects of Introduction to Competition Module A (Sport). Certification is granted following completion of on-line Ethics module and Evaluation.

Who should benefit from the course:
Those interested in coaching within the sport and those involved in recreational activities at the community level.

Date: May 6-7-8, 2011
Location: Pearlgate Track and Field Complex, Mount Pearl

Time: Friday 6pm-9:30pm; Saturday 9am-4pm; Sunday 9am-5:30pm
Fees:$125 ($5 off for NLAA registered coaches)

Kate Vaughan to run at the NACAC Cross Country Championships on February 19

Kate Vaughan (Nautilus Running Club) of St. John's will travel with Canadian national team to Trinidad and Tobago for the 2011 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships. The Championships will take place this Saturday February 19. Kate is set to compete in Senior Women 6km race.

A field of more than 170 athletes representing 16 national federations will compete on February 19 at the seventh annual North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Cross Country Championships at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

Cross Country running is both an individual event as well as a team sport. At the NACAC Championships each country can enter a maximum of 6 athletes per race (Junior, Senior / Men, Women) with the individual placing of each country's top 4 runners included to accumulate a team score.

The NACAC Championships will contest races for the open men's 8 km, open women's 6 km, junior men's 6 km and junior women's 4 km.

Athletics Canada lays foundation for Rio; announces Team 2016 Olympic Development Program

OTTAWA - Athletics Canada is happy to announce today the details and guidelines regarding Team 2016 Olympic Development Program (ODP). ODP was designed to create a development pathway leading to sustainable high performance success in 2016 and beyond. The program’s objectives are to identify, promote, develop and retain high performance athletes in a Canadian environment.

The primary focus is on athletes between the ages of 17 and 24 who have achieved a minimum progression standard and have not yet reached the final at a World Championship or Olympic Games. ODP will provide identified athletes structure, leadership, and resources as they move through the pathway to Olympic and World success. The program divides athletes into two squads; a Juniors Squad (17-19 years old) and a Rising Stars Squad (20-24 years old). The two squads are further divided into Tier 1 and Tier 2 divisions. The tiers recognise different levels of performance and commitment to training environments in each respective group. Athletes enter the ODP in Tier 2 once they achieve the minimum D performance standard with the objective of moving to Tier 1 and targeting the 2016 Program.

The criteria for the tiered squads - Tier 1, Tier 2 and 2016 program - are aligned with Athletics Canada’s carding program and high performance plan. It takes into account the level of performance, training environment, coaching environment, and whether athletes are Centre-linked or at a National training Centre. Each tier features benefits such as coach/athlete programming, Canadian Sports Centres services such as biomechanical assessments, physical therapy assessments and treatments, nutritional guidance and support under the direction of the Event Group Coaches. Other benefits include event group/centre led technical assistance, competition opportunities, training opportunities through national camps, event group camps, national centre visits and coach support.

The 2010-2011 "Premier's Athletic Awards Application" is available for download.

“The Premier's Athletic Awards Program is designed to recognize athletic excellence of the province's elite athletes. Financial support is provided to these athletes to defray the costs incurred through training and competition and must be used for this purpose only.

Athletes must be currently training and competing in the sport indicated and continue to train upon receipt of their award.”

Please note that all applications must be fully completed and returned to the NLAA office, not the provincial government. When completing the form please include all relevant performances from Sept 2009 through December 2010. The deadline (received) for all applications is Friday, January 21st, 2011. The NLAA will not accept applications after this date. Applications can be downloaded off the NLAA website at: http://nlaa.ca/download/PAAP_guideslines_application_nlaa.pdf.
